A wallbox is a cast iron or steel socket embedded in a wall during construction to receive and support the end of a shaft, beam, or girder. It provides a seated bearing point where the load transfers from the structural member into the masonry or concrete. The box is set flush with the wall surface or slightly recessed, and the shaft end rests on a ledge or bearing surface inside it.
Wallboxes are most common in industrial buildings and mills where rotating shafts run across multiple bays. A shaft carrying pulleys or gears will have its bearing journals supported by wallboxes at intervals along its length. The boxes are cast with flanges that embed into the mortar joints or concrete pour, locking them in place. Cast iron remains standard because it resists wear from shaft rotation and distributes load broadly across its seat.
Construction and installation
The socket interior is machined to a bearing surface, typically a shallow cone or flat seat. A shaft end (the journal) drops into the wallbox and rests on this surface. Oil grooves are often cast into the bearing surface to feed lubrication. The box exterior has mounting flanges with bolt holes so it can be pinned to formwork before the wall is poured, or mortared in place during brick laying. Dimensions vary widely but a typical wallbox might be 150 to 300 mm deep and accept a shaft journal of 50 to 100 mm diameter.
The weakness of wallbox bearings is that they concentrate load at a single point on the wall, and vibration from a rotating shaft can loosen the socket over time. In damp conditions, rust can form at the bearing surface if oil films break down. Modern replacement shafts are often supported on bracket-mounted pillow blocks instead, which are easier to adjust and maintain.
The term wallbox reflects its function: a box set into a wall. It is sometimes called a wall socket or bearing box, though in British trade the older term plumber block occasionally appears in historical texts, though that term more often refers to a floor-mounted pedestal bearing. Wallboxes are now less common than they were in the early industrial era, when long mill shafts driven by a single motor or water wheel needed regular support across rows of machines.
