Battening is the process of installing battens, which are thin strips of wood (typically 25 mm to 75 mm wide and 12 mm to 25 mm thick) fixed to a structural surface to serve as spacers, supports, or fixing points for other materials. A batten creates a gap between the primary surface and whatever is attached to it, allowing for air circulation, drainage, thermal breaks, or simply providing a nailing surface where none exists.

The most common application is in roofing, where battens run horizontally across rafters to support roof tiles or slates. Each tile hooks over a batten, and the spacing between battens is calculated to match the tile length minus the lap (the amount one tile overlaps the next). In wall construction, battens support cladding materials like timber boards, weatherboard, or metal panels, holding them at a consistent distance from the substrate and allowing water to drain behind. They are also used in suspended ceilings, where they provide attachment points for ceiling materials while creating a service void.

Traditional battens are sawn softwood, often untreated pine or fir, though pressure-treated varieties are used where moisture exposure is high. Metal battens, usually steel or aluminium, appear in industrial or high-performance applications. Battens are fixed with nails, screws, or occasionally adhesive, depending on the load and whether the batten itself must remain removable. Spacing between battens depends entirely on the material they support: roof tile battens might be 350 mm to 450 mm apart, while wall cladding battens vary from 400 mm to 600 mm.

Problems arise when battens rot, warp, or compress under load. In roofing, undersized or spaced battens can sag and cause tiles to slip or crack. Moisture trapped behind cladding battens without adequate drainage encourages decay and mould. Building codes specify minimum batten dimensions for given span lengths and loads. The term comes from the verb "to batten", meaning to fasten with strips, and has been used in construction since at least the 17th century.

Battening sits at the boundary between rough structural work and finished assembly. It is not structural itself but is critical to how loads transfer and how materials perform. A carpenter or roofer must understand batten spacing, fixing density, and material choice as fundamental to job quality and durability.
