washdirt: ore-bearing soil worth processing for metal
Washdirt is surface or near-surface earth containing sufficient metal value, usually gold or tin, to justify the cost of washing and concentration. Unlike true ore, which requires smelting, washdirt yields metal through gravity separation and water processing alone. The material sits at the economic threshold: too lean to dig and handle as conventional ore, but rich enough that simple water-based recovery pays.
The term originated in alluvial and placer mining, where weathered rock and soil naturally concentrate metals in stream deposits and slope wash. Prospectors and small operators could identify washdirt by panning: if gold or cassiterite appeared consistently in a few grams of material, the ground was worth working. The economic calculation is direct: cost of labor, water, and simple equipment must not exceed the metal value recovered.
Working washdirt in practice
Traditional methods use gravity tables, sluices, and panning to separate metal from clay, sand, and fine gravel. A typical operation might process 10 to 50 cubic meters per day using hand or horse labor, depending on the grade and the metal sought. Water consumption is substantial; a small sluice operation needs 5 to 20 cubic meters per hour. The tailings, which may contain fine clays and silts, are returned to watercourses or spread downslope, a practice now regulated or prohibited in most jurisdictions.
Washdirt grades are expressed informally but understood in the trade. Material yielding a few grams of gold per cubic meter of wet soil is marginal; 10 to 20 grams per cubic meter is considered paying dirt in regions with low labor costs. Tin-bearing washdirt is often worked at lower grades because tin is denser and concentrates more readily. The presence of heavy minerals such as magnetite and ilmenite can interfere with gravity separation of target metals, requiring additional sorting or magnetic separation.
The distinction between washdirt and ore reflects mining economics and processing capability rather than absolute metallurgy. A deposit too lean for large-scale open pit mining may still be washdirt for a family operation with water access and cheap labor. Conversely, a deposit called washdirt in a remote location becomes ore if a processing plant arrives nearby. The term remains in use among artisanal and small-scale miners in Southeast Asia, West Africa, and Latin America, though environmental regulation has curtailed open washing in many places.
