Tailings are the fine-grained residue discharged after ore processing removes valuable minerals. In metal mining, ore is crushed and concentrated through mechanical or chemical separation, leaving behind gangue (worthless rock and minerals) mixed with water. This slurry, typically 15 to 40 percent solids by weight, is what miners call tailings. In coal mining, tailings consist of refuse coal, clay, and shale separated during cleaning. The volume is enormous: a typical copper operation produces 2 to 3 tons of tailings for every ton of ore mined.
The composition and handling method depend on the mineral being extracted. In hard rock mining, tailings are pumped as a slurry to impoundments or filtered and stacked as dry paste; copper, gold, and iron operations all use different settling times and dam configurations. Coal preparation produces coarser refuse that settles more quickly. Some operations recycle tailings water back into the process to reduce consumption and environmental discharge. The fineness of tailings particles, often below 200 mesh (75 micrometers), directly affects settling rates and dam design requirements.
Storage and failure modes
Tailings are stored behind dams or in dry stacks because the volume prohibits disposal as solid waste. A single large mine can generate 100,000 to 500,000 tons of tailings per day. Tailings dams face unusual geotechnical challenges: they are built progressively upward as mining continues, contain fine saturated material prone to liquefaction, and may hold acidic or chemically reactive content. Breach events, though rare relative to the total number of facilities in operation, cause severe environmental and community damage because of the large volume released suddenly.
Acid mine drainage is a chronic hazard in tailings, particularly from sulfide mineral operations. Iron sulfides oxidize in contact with water and oxygen, generating sulfuric acid that dissolves other minerals and can persist for decades or centuries. Neutral mine drainage or neutral tailings, created by pre-treating ore or tailings to consume acid-generating potential before stacking, reduces long-term liability. Some operations add alkaline material directly to the tailings slurry during placement.
The word tailings derives from the verb tail, meaning to follow or remove what remains behind. It entered mining vocabulary in the 19th century as operations scaled and waste volumes became impossible to ignore. Today tailings management is a major operating cost and a principal driver of mining project permitting timelines. Regulatory frameworks increasingly require closure plans, long-term monitoring protocols, and financial assurance for eventual remediation, making tailings storage one of the largest liabilities on a mine operator's balance sheet.
