A water-line model is a scale model of a ship's hull built by stacking and laminating thin wooden boards (typically ash, pine, or mahogany) that have been shaped to match the vessel's contours at successive water lines. Each board represents a horizontal slice through the design, taken from the ship's lines plan. When assembled vertically and glued together, these boards create a solid three-dimensional form that accurately represents the underwater and above-water geometry of the proposed hull.
The model is constructed directly from the designer's lines drawing, which shows the ship's profile, body plan, and sheer lines. A craftsperson (called a model maker or lofter) scales the water-line curves from the plans, transfers them to wooden stock, and cuts or planes each board to shape. The boards are then stacked in sequence and fastened together. This method allows errors in the design to be caught before expensive full-scale construction begins, and serves as a permanent reference record of the hull form.
Water-line models were essential in shipbuilding and naval design long before computer modeling. A completed model allows designers and builders to inspect the hull aesthetically and functionally, check for fairness in the lines, and verify that the shape will behave correctly in water. The model can also be used to plan the arrangement of internal structure, determine weight distribution, and communicate the design to investors or naval authorities. Scale and material choice depend on the ship's size and the level of detail required; large vessels might be modeled at 1:48 scale or smaller, while smaller ships or experimental designs might be 1:12 or larger.
The term arises directly from the construction method: the model is built according to the water lines, the horizontal design curves that define how the hull sits in the water and changes along its length. This is distinct from other modeling techniques that work from different sections or employ carving methods. The laminated board construction is sometimes called bread-and-butter modeling in modern contexts, though water-line model is the traditional shipbuilding term.
Although computer-aided design has largely replaced physical water-line models in modern naval architecture, the technique remains in use for restoration work, historical research, and specialized applications where tactile evaluation and precise geometric verification are valuable. A well-made water-line model remains an accurate, durable representation of a vessel's form.
