A type of device that is screwed onto the end of a garden hose in order to reduce water pressure without decreasing the volume.

A water wand is a spray attachment that fits onto the threaded outlet of a garden hose and modulates water delivery by converting high-pressure stream into a wider, gentler spray pattern. Unlike standard nozzles that restrict flow to raise pressure, a water wand maintains volume while dropping the force of impact, making it suited to tasks where pressure damage matters more than reach or intensity.

The internal design typically uses a diffuser chamber or perforated baffle that breaks the incoming jet into dozens or hundreds of smaller streams. Water enters through a single port and exits through an array of small holes or slots, spreading the available flow across a much larger area. This geometry naturally reduces pressure at the point of use without creating significant backpressure in the hose itself. Most consumer models screw directly onto the hose barb fitting with a female threaded inlet, and the outlet may be a simple spray head or a trigger-controlled valve.

Practical variants and applications

Industrial water wands come in several configurations. Handheld models with 6 to 12 inch spray heads are common for greenhouse watering, vegetable gardens, or cleaning surfaces where runoff control is important. Fixed overhead wands on articulated arms appear in nurseries and agricultural operations. Some designs incorporate a pistol-grip trigger that closes an internal ball valve, letting users start and stop flow without kinking the hose or reducing pressure at the source. Stainless steel versions resist corrosion in salt-air environments, while PVC or ABS plastic models suit freshwater applications at lower cost.

The main failure mode is nozzle clogging from sediment or mineral buildup in the hose water. If supply water contains significant suspended solids or hardness, the small openings in the spray head can block or weep unevenly, creating dead zones in the spray pattern. Cleaning by soaking in vinegar or running the wand backward can restore flow, though heavy scaling may require replacement of the head.

The name reflects its form: a wand-like handle with a flat or rounded spray head at the tip, resembling a magic wand in silhouette. It differs from a "rose" (the perforated metal disk used on watering cans) mainly in being mounted on pressurized hose rather than gravity feed, and from a high-pressure spray nozzle in that it prioritizes coverage and gentleness over range and impact force. In professional landscaping and horticulture, a water wand is considered a basic tool rather than specialized equipment, typically costing between 10 and 50 dollars depending on durability and trigger mechanism.
