webbing: the tape system that moves paper through a press

Webbing consists of tensioned fabric or rubber belts that grip and advance a continuous web of paper, film, or other substrate through a printing press or converting machine. Unlike individual sheets fed one at a time, web presses handle an unbroken roll, and webbing is what keeps that roll moving at precise speed and position through each printing station. The webbing must maintain uniform tension, resist stretching, and grip without slipping or marking the substrate.

Modern webbing typically uses reinforced rubber or synthetic polymer compositions, often with a woven fabric base embedded in the top layer. Width ranges from a few inches in narrow-format presses to several meters in wide-format packaging presses. The underside usually features a backing that runs against guide rollers and a mechanical drive system. Thickness is usually 3 to 8 millimeters, chosen to balance durability with the speed and pressure demands of the specific press.

Webbing deteriorates through abrasion against rollers, hardening from heat and ultraviolet exposure, and loss of grip as the surface roughness flattens. Slack webbing causes register errors, where successive color layers misalign. Overtension accelerates wear and can distort the web itself. Most modern presses include tension sensors that adjust driven rollers automatically, keeping webbing pressure within a narrow band. Webbing typically requires replacement every 18 to 36 months depending on speed, substrate type, and maintenance discipline.

The name webbing derives directly from its function: handling a web (continuous roll) rather than cut sheets. In offset lithography, webbing must release ink-covered paper without sticking, which demands precisely controlled surface energy. In gravure and flexography, webbing speed synchronizes with doctor blade dwell times, so wear that changes webbing diameter by even 0.2 millimeters can degrade print quality. Webbing also appears in converting operations, die-cutting lines, and lamination presses where it serves as the drive medium between processing stations.
