The instrument attached to the rudder by which a vessel is steered.

wheel: the helm that turns a ship's rudder

A ship's wheel is a large rotating disk or spoke assembly mounted on the bridge or wheelhouse, mechanically or hydraulically connected to the rudder head below. Turning the wheel moves the rudder vane side to side in the water, altering the vessel's heading. On modern ships, the wheel may be small and require light effort because hydraulic or electric servo systems do the real work; on older vessels or smaller craft, it is larger and demands physical strength to overcome water pressure on the rudder.

The mechanical linkage between wheel and rudder runs through the ship's structure as a steering column, often with a gearbox that provides mechanical advantage. A chain or cable system, or more commonly on modern vessels, a hydraulic line transmits rotation to a quadrant or similar fitting bolted to the rudder stock. The ratio between wheel turns and rudder movement varies: a typical ship might require 2 to 4 complete wheel rotations to move the rudder 35 degrees hard over. Smaller vessels sometimes use direct mechanical connection with no reduction gear.

Wheels are marked with a brass or painted band at the midship position (0 degrees rudder angle) and often have radial spokes numbered in increments of 5 or 10 degrees. This marking helps the helmsman judge rudder angle by feel and by the wheel's position. Traditional wheels have 6, 8, or 10 spokes; the diameter is typically 1 to 1.5 meters on oceangoing ships, sized for comfortable grip and leverage.

Failure modes and redundancy

Steering gear failures are critical, so ships carry independent steering systems. A main system might use hydraulic servos with electric pumps; a backup system must be operable by manual hydraulic power or direct mechanical means, sometimes requiring crew to move the wheel with substantially greater effort. Modern regulations require the backup to be testable weekly and capable of turning the rudder in under 60 seconds without power assist.

The term "wheel" survives in naval language even on container ships and tankers that use joystick or push-button helm control in the wheelhouse; the steering mechanism itself remains, though the hand wheel may no longer be the primary input device. Failure to maintain steering systems has caused collisions and groundings, making this simple mechanical interface a subject of intense maritime regulation and inspection.
