club: drift sideways while anchored

To club is to move sideways or downwind while your anchor holds, typically caused by a strong tidal or wind current pressing the hull perpendicular to the anchor line. The ship swings not around the anchor point but drifts bodily across it, the anchor remaining engaged but unable to prevent lateral movement. This is a working condition, not a failure, and happens regularly in tidal waters where the current direction shifts faster than the vessel can swing.

The mechanism is straightforward: if wind or current pushes on your beam (the side) while anchored, the boat wants to move sideways. If the anchor has good hold, it pivots and the vessel rotates to align with the new force. But in strong cross-currents or during tidal transitions, the pressure can overcome the pivoting moment, and the hull slides sideways while the anchor cable remains taut at an angle. This sliding motion is the club.

Where clubbing matters

It becomes operationally significant in confined anchorages where lateral drift eats into swinging room. A vessel clubbing in a narrow harbor can close on adjacent ships or structures even though the anchor is holding. Shipyard anchorages, river moorings, and tidal channels are the main trouble spots. The cable tension may increase noticeably as the boat resists being pulled sideways, and the anchor angle steepens, reducing its holding power in the process.

Prevention and management depend on water depth, anchor type, and cable length. In deeper water, a longer scope helps because the anchor cable becomes more horizontal, resisting lateral pull more effectively. In shallow anchorages where scope is limited, clubbing is harder to prevent and often just accepted as normal. Some crews use secondary anchors or springs attached to fixed points ashore to limit drift.

The term likely derives from the club-like or rounded shape of the anchor's swing path when clubbing occurs, or from the club-shaped pressure cone the current creates around the hull. It is a regional term most common in British maritime practice and less frequently heard in North American shipyard vocabulary, though the phenomenon itself is universal.
