Witts are tin ore particles that have been liberated from surrounding rock and soil through mechanical crushing, typically in a stamping mill. The term refers specifically to the intermediate product after initial ore processing but before final smelting, when the ore has been broken down finely enough that the tin mineral (cassiterite) separates from waste rock, yet remains as a solid concentrate rather than a refined metal.

The production of witts begins with raw tin ore extraction from shallow alluvial deposits or open pits. The ore is fed into a stamping mill, where heavy weighted stamps or pestles driven by water power or later steam power crush the ore into progressively finer particles. The stamped material then passes through sieves or settling tanks where gravity and water washing separate the denser cassiterite from lighter earthy matter. What remains after this separation is witts: a product enriched in tin ore but still containing rock fragments and clay.

Regional and historical context

The term is distinctly regional, recorded primarily in Cornish tin mining records and to a lesser extent in Devon and other British tin districts. By the 18th and 19th centuries, witts were a standard intermediate commodity traded between mine operators and smelters. The word itself is believed to derive from Old English or Cornish roots, though its exact etymology is uncertain. Witts could be stored and transported relatively easily compared to raw ore, and their standardised state made trading and pricing more consistent.

A tin mine operator would contract to deliver witts by the ton to a smelting works rather than raw ore, as this reduced transport costs and allowed the smelter to receive material already partially beneficiated. The quality of witts varied depending on the efficiency of the stamping and washing process; poorly separated witts might contain 40 to 50 percent tin ore, while good witts could exceed 60 percent cassiterite content.

The term has largely fallen out of active use with the decline of Cornish tin mining and the shift to mechanised milling and flotation concentration methods in the 20th century. Modern mills produce a standardised concentrate rather than the heterogeneous witts of earlier mining. However, the word survives in historical mining records, geological literature, and among those familiar with the heritage and vocabulary of tin extraction in southwest England.
