A work-stone is a sloping cast iron plate installed at the front edge of a forge hearth, positioned to catch falling material and direct sparks and scale downward and away from the work area. It sits at an angle of roughly 30 to 45 degrees, tilted back toward the hearth, and typically measures between 18 inches and 3 feet across depending on the forge size. The plate must be thick enough to withstand repeated thermal shock and impact from hot metal and tools.

The work-stone serves several practical functions simultaneously. It protects the floor directly in front of the hearth from the constant rain of incandescent scale and cinder that falls during forging. It catches fragments of work metal that slip from tongs, reducing dangerous scatter across the shop. The slope also redirects heat and sparks downward into a collection area or ash pit below, keeping them from rising into the smith's face and upper body. On some installations, the work-stone slopes toward a channel or trough that directs cooled scale and ash toward a removal point.

Cast iron is chosen for its thermal mass and durability under thermal cycling. The surface develops a built-up layer of scale and carbon residue over time, which actually improves its protective qualities by reducing direct contact between hot work and the fresh metal beneath. Most work-stones are bolted or keyed directly to the hearth frame, though older installations are sometimes set in place with clay or fired brick.

Damage to a work-stone occurs primarily at its leading edge, where the slope meets the floor level. Repeated impacts from dropped work and tool strikes create chipping and cracking. Deep cracks eventually require replacement, as they trap moisture that can cause explosive spalling during high heat. The work-stone is distinct from the hearth itself, which is the central chamber where fuel burns; the work-stone is purely a protective apron positioned outside that chamber.

The term appears in 19th and 20th century forge manuals and remains in use in traditional and small-scale blacksmithing shops. Modern industrial forges often use similar protection but may integrate it differently with enclosed hearth designs. The work-stone remains standard equipment where hand forging and open hearths are still practiced.
