A workstone is a flat, dense stone slab kept on a construction site as a working surface and test platform for materials and tools. Masons and stonemasons use it to shape, dress, and finish stone pieces; to test mortar consistency and set time; and to keep hand tools sharp and ready. Unlike a formal workbench, it sits directly on the ground or a low stand, sized to be portable yet substantial enough to absorb hammer blows without damage.
The workstone must be harder and more stable than the stones being worked on it. Granite, slate, and sandstone blocks between 18 and 36 inches across and 4 to 6 inches thick are common. The surface should be relatively flat and free of fissures that could trap chips or cause tools to catch. Many masons preserve an old, scarred workstone for years because its familiar surface and slight unevenness become assets rather than liabilities; the hollows catch stone dust and water, and the texture gives tools better grip.
Practical roles on site
A workstone serves multiple functions simultaneously. It is the place where pointing chisels are honed before detailed work; where mortar batches are tested for adhesion and workability; where ashlar pieces are cut to length or dressed to fit; where wet stones are set to cure just enough before placement; and where small tools are laid out to stay within arm's reach. Because it sits close to the work, it reduces fatigue and the risk of tool loss compared to a distant bench.
The name reflects its simplicity: it is a stone with which one works, distinguished from decorative stone, load-bearing stone in a wall, or stone kept in a stockpile. In traditional practice, a workstone often becomes site property, passed from one crew to the next or left behind as a permanent fixture when a long job ends. Its wear pattern records the type of work done and the skill of those who used it.
