worm: fill rope grooves before binding it tight

Worming is the practice of wrapping small-diameter rope or yarn spirally into the grooves and valleys that run along the length of a larger rope. The purpose is to fill these natural depressions so that the rope presents a smooth, even surface before the next stage of preparation. Once wormed, the rope is then parcelled (wrapped with strips of canvas or tarred cloth) and served (bound tightly with thin twine or marline). This three-step process, known as worming, parcelling, and serving, or WPS, protects standing rigging and other permanent rope from weather damage and chafe.

The small stuff used for worming is typically tarred yarn, oakum, or thin rope of roughly 3 to 6 millimetres diameter, depending on the size of the rope being treated. The wormer works by hand, laying the small rope along each groove while maintaining even tension. On a large rope such as a ship's main mast stay, which may be 75 to 150 millimetres in diameter, this filling prevents water from collecting inside the lay of the strands and causing rot. It also creates a uniform base that makes parcelling neater and more effective.

The term comes from the appearance of the spiral wrap, which resembles a worm crawling helically around the rope. Early rope workers had no better metaphor than this common observation. The verb form has remained standard in maritime vocabulary since at least the 18th century, and the practice itself is older still.

Worming is essential on any rope that will be left exposed to the elements for extended periods. Modern synthetic rope is more weather-resistant than natural fibre, and the cost of labour has made WPS less common in contemporary commercial shipping. However, the technique remains standard in naval vessels, in restoration of historical ships, and in sailing vessels where traditionalism and durability are priorities. Rope that is not wormed before serving tends to gather moisture and debris in its grooves, shortening its working life by years.

Poor worming results in lumpy parcelling, weak spots where serving cannot bite, and accelerated deterioration once the rope is in service. The work requires experience to maintain consistent tension and spacing; too loose and gaps remain, too tight and the small stuff cuts into the rope's outer strands.
