Worming is the migration and bunching of yarn or thread within a woven fabric after weaving is complete. The thread shifts laterally across the width of the cloth, creating ridges, puckers, or lumps that distort the fabric surface and often render it unusable. This is a defect in the finished goods, not a weaving fault per se, and typically manifests hours or days after the cloth leaves the loom.
The phenomenon occurs most commonly in tightly woven fabrics with high thread count, particularly in cotton, wool, and synthetic blends where yarns are under tension during weaving. When that tension is released, the thread does not relax uniformly. Instead, individual yarns slip sideways within the weave structure, seeking a lower-energy configuration. Synthetic filaments are especially prone to this because they lack the friction and crimp that natural fibers offer. Loose weave structures and well-balanced tension generally resist worming; tight weaves and uneven thread tension encourage it.
Why it happens and how to avoid it
Worming accelerates under moisture and temperature fluctuation, which is why it often appears after fabric is rolled and stored. Humidity causes fibers to swell unevenly; temperature changes induce differential contraction. Both conditions reduce the grip between adjacent yarns and allow the thread to slip. Prevention depends on loom setup: even tension across all warp threads, moderate weave density, and proper sizing of the warp to maintain friction between yarns. Some mills pre-relax fabric by steaming or by controlled humidity conditioning immediately after weaving to allow yarns to settle gradually rather than suddenly.
The term derives from the appearance of the defect, which resembles a worm moving beneath the fabric surface. It is distinct from other weaving faults such as slubs, neps, or weaving loom errors. Worming is detected by visual inspection, sometimes with the fabric laid flat under controlled lighting, and is grounds for rejection in quality cloth destined for apparel, upholstery, or technical textiles. In heavy industrial fabrics, minor worming may be tolerated if it does not affect structural performance.
