WORM drive

A write once, read many drive; data storage technology that allows information to be written to a disc a single time and prevents the drive from erasing the data.

WORM drive: write-once storage that locks data permanently

A WORM drive is an optical storage device, typically using 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch discs, that records data in a non-reversible format. Once information is written to a disc sector, that sector becomes read-only and cannot be overwritten, modified, or erased. The drive mechanism physically alters the reflectivity of the disc surface using a laser to create permanent pits, making accidental or intentional data destruction impossible after the initial write.

The technology emerged in the 1980s as a solution for archival storage and compliance requirements in finance, healthcare, and government sectors where data integrity and non-repudiation are critical. A WORM disc can hold between 650 MB and 5 GB per disc depending on the generation and format (CD-R, DVD-R, or proprietary formats). The drive contains both write optics and read optics; writing requires higher laser power to create permanent marks, while reading uses lower power to sense existing marks without causing further changes.

Real-world deployment and limitations

WORM drives were particularly common in legal discovery workflows, medical imaging archives, and financial transaction records where regulatory bodies mandate that audit trails remain tamper-proof. However, optical media degrades over decades; gold or silver-based polycarbonate substrates degrade at different rates depending on storage temperature and humidity, with lifespan estimates ranging from 20 to 100 years. This unpredictability has driven migration toward magnetic tape with similar write-protect mechanisms for long-term archival.

The primary operational risk is accepting corrupted or incomplete data during the write phase, since that data becomes permanent. Unlike rewritable drives (CD-RW, DVD-RW), there is no second chance to correct errors. Some WORM systems included read-after-write verification to detect errors before the sector was finalized, but not all implementations included this feature. Physical damage to the disc surface (scratches, dust) also creates unrecoverable read errors once the data is locked in place.

WORM technology is now largely superseded by magnetic tape with WORM-equivalent software controls, cloud-based immutable object storage, and blockchain-backed archive systems. Legacy WORM drives remain in use mainly for accessing existing archives and in niche compliance environments where the optical format itself provides legal defensibility. The term persists in storage architecture discussions even as the underlying technology phases out.
