The side of a fabric, often with a less visible color or pattern, that is not intended to be seen on a finished project.
wrong side: the hidden face of every fabric
In textile production, the wrong side is the reverse face of a woven or knitted fabric, the surface that will not be visible in the finished garment or product. It is created during the weaving or knitting process as the back of the structure, and it typically shows looser fibers, less defined pattern clarity, and a duller or more muted appearance than the right side. For woven fabrics, the wrong side may display pulled threads, knots, or weaving faults that are hidden when the garment is worn. This distinction matters because pattern matching, color consistency, and fiber finish are engineered into the right side alone.
The wrong side appearance varies sharply by fabric type and construction. In printed cotton, the print is sharp and vivid on the right side but pale and fuzzy on the reverse, where ink did not fully penetrate. Knitted jersey shows clear loops on the right and a bumpy or looped texture on the wrong side. In twill weaves, the diagonal pattern reverses direction between the two sides. Some fabrics are intentionally finished so both sides look identical, called double-faced cloth; these are used for reversible garments and are more labor-intensive and costly to produce.
Practical implications in cutting and assembly
Garment workers must identify the right side before cutting pattern pieces, because reversing a piece by accident produces a garment with reversed seams, buttonholes, or pattern runs in the wrong direction. In plaid or striped fabrics, mixing right and wrong sides creates visible mismatches. Production facilities rely on marking the wrong side with chalk, thread, or fold direction to prevent this error in high-volume cutting. Pressing and finishing work is also planned around side orientation: seams are often pressed toward the wrong side to conceal them from view.
The terms derive from functional intent rather than quality. The wrong side is not defective; it is simply the unused surface. Some designs deliberately expose or celebrate the wrong side for aesthetic effect, particularly in contemporary fashion and reversible textiles. Industrial fabric inspection equipment grades both sides separately because a flaw visible on the right side is a major defect, while the same flaw on the wrong side may be acceptable depending on the end use and whether the wrong side will ever be seen.
Understanding right and wrong side also matters for fabric storage and bolt management. Bolts are wound with the right side facing outward to protect it from dust and handling damage during transport and warehousing. When a bolt is delivered with the wrong side exposed, it signals either intentional double-faced production or a handling error upstream.
