In textile production, a shirt is a constructed garment made from woven or knitted fabric, cut and sewn to fit the upper body and arms. Unlike a simple tunic or chemise, a shirt incorporates a structured front opening (usually button or snap closures), a collar, fitted sleeves, and side seams. The factory floor distinguishes shirts from t-shirts primarily by sleeve construction and closure type; a dress shirt or work shirt has a placket and collar stand, while a t-shirt uses a simpler neckband with no front opening.

Shirt production begins with pattern grading across size ranges, typically XS through XXL in menswear and a wider variety in womenswear. Fabric is laid up in plies (usually 20 to 40 layers), cut with band knives or laser cutters, then the pieces move through bundled sorting. Sleeves are set using an automated sleeve setter that feeds the cap smoothly into the armhole; poor tension here causes pucker or waviness. Collar construction demands precision: interfacing is fused to fashion fabric, the collar is folded and topstitched (typically 2 to 3 mm from the edge), then sewn to the body with a collar foot attachment.

Variants and sleeve mechanics

Sleeve length defines category: short sleeves end above the elbow (typically 6 to 8 inches from shoulder), three-quarter sleeves reach mid-forearm, and full sleeves extend to the wrist. Cap depth (the curved top of the sleeve head) varies by design; shallow caps sit higher and feel sportier, while deeper caps drop lower and restrict arm motion slightly. Cuff construction uses a folded double-layer (often with interfacing) sewn to the sleeve opening; buttoned cuffs demand buttonhole placement and button setting, both critical for size tolerance.

Common production failures include armhole strain, where repeated setting cycles weaken the seam allowance and cause seam failure after washing. Collar curl happens when the undercollar shrinks more than the collar fashion fabric due to differential heat exposure or fabric quality; this requires careful pressing and sometimes a stabilizing stitch on the roll line. Fabric defects like slubs or streaks are checked during lay-up; a single visible flaw can require the entire piece to be cut from a different layer or marked as second-quality.

The name derives from Old English sceorte, related to 'short' (as opposed to the long shirt or chemise worn under armour), though modern shirts cover varying lengths. In industrial settings, shirts are graded by fabric weight (measured in ounces per square yard or grams per square meter) and construction complexity; a simple poplin work shirt runs 12 to 14 oz woven fabric, while dress shirts use finer, more densely woven cloth at 8 to 10 oz. Production volume determines whether buttons are sewn by dedicated machines or by hand in slower operations.
