yoctokatal: one septillion reactions per second

A yoctokatal is the smallest SI unit of catalytic activity, equal to 10−24 katals. The katal itself measures the rate at which an enzyme or catalyst converts reactants into products: one katal means one mole of substance is transformed per second. A yoctokatal therefore describes catalytic turnover at the scale of individual molecules or femtomole quantities, measured in reactions per second.

The prefix yocto, from the Greek word for "one" combined with the mathematical notation for 10−24, is the smallest SI prefix in current use. It sits at the extreme boundary of practical measurement. By contrast, a typical enzyme assay might report activity in microkatal (μkat) or nanokatal (nkat) range. The yoctokatal finds use almost exclusively in theoretical calculations, computational enzyme modeling, and highly specialized single-molecule biochemistry rather than in routine laboratory work.

Where it appears in metrology

Metrology and inspection standards recognize the yoctokatal as part of the complete SI system, though few real-world measurements actually report in this unit. It matters because SI completeness requires it: if you are documenting a catalytic assay across multiple scales of magnitude, or designing software that must handle arbitrary SI quantities, the yoctokatal must be available. Calibration certificates and instrument specifications that claim SI compliance must acknowledge the full range of units, even those beyond practical use.

In practice, yoctokatal appears in research papers on single-enzyme kinetics, in molecular simulation software outputs, and in theoretical biochemistry where reaction rates are modeled at the molecule or atom level. Measurement uncertainty statements in high-precision work sometimes reference the yoctokatal floor as a threshold below which reporting becomes meaningless.

The unit underscores the difference between a measurement system and a measurement problem. SI gives you the vocabulary; thermodynamic limits, instrument noise, and statistical variance determine what you can actually resolve. A yoctokatal is real, standardized, and useless for most purposes, which is precisely why it belongs in a metrology reference.
