yoctogram: a septillion-trillionth of a gram

A yoctogram (yg) is the smallest standard unit of mass in the International System of Units, equal to 10−24 grams or one septillion-trillionth of a gram. It represents the lowest rung of the SI prefix ladder, paired with the prefix yocto, adopted in 1991. In practical terms, a yoctogram is roughly the mass of a single proton, making it a theoretical benchmark rather than a working measurement in conventional metrology.

The yocto prefix comes from the Latin numeral octo (eight), reflecting that it is the eighth decimal step below the base unit, stepping down in powers of 1,000. Officially symbolized as lowercase y, the yoctogram occupies the extreme lower boundary of the SI system, sitting below the yattogram (1024 g) at the opposite end of the scale. This symmetry in nomenclature underscores the SI's design as a unified framework spanning the measurable universe.

When yoctograms matter

In practical metrology, yoctograms rarely appear in routine calibration or manufacturing inspection. They emerge primarily in theoretical physics, nuclear mass spectroscopy, and quantum-scale research, where scientists describe the mass of elementary particles, atomic nuclei, or exotic states of matter. A single electron has a mass near 0.91 yg; a neutron approximately 1,675 yg. Such measurements demand specialized instrumentation like Penning traps or mass spectrometers operating at extreme precision, not the balances found in machine shops or inspection labs.

The yoctogram's existence in the SI reflects metrological completeness rather than practical utility. Most industrial and laboratory work operates between the milligram and kilogram range. The unit serves as a reference point for theoretical calculations and a reminder that SI prefixes extend far beyond everyday experience. Its presence in standards documents ensures that no physicist or engineer is left without a standardized term should such masses ever require routine designation.
