A yottametre is 10 to the 24th power metres, or 1 septillion metres in short scale notation. It exists as a defined SI unit of length, though it has never been used in any practical measurement. The symbol is Ym. It sits at the extreme end of the SI prefix system, far beyond any distance a working metrologist will encounter.
The yotta prefix was officially adopted by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in 1991, completing the SI prefix ladder at that time. One yottametre is roughly 100 billion light years, which exceeds the observable universe by a factor of many billions. This unit was added for completeness and mathematical symmetry of the SI system, not because scientists expected to measure anything at that scale.
Context in the measurement world
In practical metrology and inspection, you will work with metres, millimetres, micrometres, or nanometres depending on your field. Even in astronomy and cosmology, distances are expressed in light years, parsecs, or AU rather than yottametres. The yottametre serves as a theoretical boundary marker for the SI system. No instruments measure in yottametres, and no calibration standard references this unit.
