zettagram: a trillion metric tons, rarely used in practice

A zettagram is a unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI), equal to 1021 grams or one sextillion kilograms. The symbol is Zg. It sits at the extreme end of the SI mass scale, far beyond any measurement encountered in ordinary industrial work or even in most scientific fields.

The name follows the SI prefix convention. "Zetta" is the prefix for 1021, derived from the Italian word "sette" (seven), marking the seventh step up the scale of powers of 1,000. It was officially adopted by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1991. The prefix sits above "exa" (1018) and below "yotta" (1024), the current upper limit of standardized SI prefixes.

In practice, zettagrams have almost no use in metrology, inspection, or manufacturing. To provide scale: the entire mass of Earth is approximately 5,972 zettagrams. The annual production of steel globally is measured in gigatons (about 2,000 Gt), which equals 0.002 zettagrams. A single zettagram is so vast that it exceeds the combined output of every foundry, mill, and factory on the planet in any reasonable time frame.

The unit exists in SI tables for mathematical completeness and for theoretical physics and cosmology, where comparisons of planetary or stellar masses may require such notation. In inspection and measurement work, practitioners might encounter zettagrams only in conversion tables, academic texts, or when working backward from extremely large astronomical datasets. For all terrestrial industrial purposes, units at the kilogram, metric ton, or gigatogram scale remain the practical choice.
