rontosecond: one septillion of a second
A rontosecond is a unit of time equal to 10−27 seconds, abbreviated rs. It belongs to the formal SI system adopted in 2022 when the General Conference on Weights and Measures added four new metric prefixes to cover extreme scales. At this timescale, you are measuring phenomena involving nuclear interactions and the decay of unstable particles where conventional time units become unwieldy.
The prefix ronto comes from the Old Norse runt, meaning a small amount, following the naming convention established for the other new prefixes. Below the rontosecond sits only the quectosecond (10−30 s), which is rarely used outside theoretical physics. Above it sits the yoctosecond (10−24 s), which was the previous smallest standard SI time unit before 2022.
Rontoseconds appear in high-energy physics and nuclear spectroscopy when documenting the lifetimes of exotic particles. A muon, for example, has a lifetime around 2.2 microseconds, but certain resonances in particle colliders decay on timescales that demand rontosecond precision in theoretical calculation. Metrology labs working with atomic clocks and precision timekeeping may encounter the unit in literature, though practical measurement rarely reaches this scale.
The addition of rontosecond and its companion prefixes resolved a longstanding gap in SI nomenclature. Before 2022, the system had no standard name for 10−27 or 10−30. Research institutions and standards bodies had been forced to write out powers of ten or use informal local notation, creating inconsistency in technical literature. The new prefixes standardized terminology across disciplines.
Do not confuse rontosecond with attosecond (10−18 s) or femtosecond (10−15 s), which are far larger and actually used in experimental spectroscopy and ultrafast laser work. The rontosecond remains primarily a unit for specification sheets and theoretical calculations rather than something a practitioner directly measures.
