Word of the Day 1 February 2026

studded tire

A tire with rubber that remains soft in subfreezing conditions, and equipped with metal studs (pins) to increase traction on ice by digging into it

Why this one

The studs do one job: bite glare ice, where rubber alone just slides. The trade-off is that on bare pavement they chew the road surface and sing at you, which is why many places restrict them to set months of the year.

In use

She's on studded tires until April, so don't be surprised when you hear her coming down the shop lane.
