crop rotation
A farming practice in which the same land is used to grow different crops in successive seasons or years (when once the land would have been left fallow); used to prevent erosion and increase fertility.
Why this one
The gains are not only chemical: changing the crop changes the root depth, the residue left behind and the pest cycle that was building up in the previous stand. Legumes in the sequence do fertility work no pass with a spreader replaces.
In use
