jasperware
A form of pottery that has a stoneware body which is either white or colored, which is noted for its matte finish. It is a popular blue-and-white ware, but it comes in many other colors.
Why this one
The matte, unglazed surface is the point: colour is fired into the body itself rather than sitting in a glaze, so applied white reliefs read crisply against it. Blue is the familiar version, but sage, black, lilac and yellow bodies are all jasperware too.
In use
The customer wants jasperware, so don't glaze it; that chalky finish is what they're paying for.
