The period of time when a furnace is at its hottest; the interval in which the furnace is meant to fully melt glass.
Why this one
Old vocabulary from the melting trade, where a furnace campaign was measured in founds rather than clock hours. The word survives because it names a window you either use or lose: glass melted outside it carries seeds and stones through to the forming end.
