Word of the Day 29 April 2026

vatman

The employee responsible for gathering pulp from the vat on the mould in papermaking.

Why this one

A job title straight from the hand mill, where the vat of stock sat at the centre of the crew and the man working it set the weight of every sheet. The coucher and layer took over from there, and the whole trio worked to the vatman's pace.

In use

Sheets are coming out light at one end, so get the vatman to steady his shake before we scrap another post.
