level staff
nounSurveying
A graduated rod used by surveyors to measure differences in level.
Why this one
The instrument does not measure height, it reads a number off the staff; every elevation on the job traces back to whoever held it plumb and steady. Lean it a few degrees and the reading comes out too big every time.
In use
Hold the level staff up straight on the peg, you're leaning it back and I'm reading half an inch high.
