Ballast: Dead Weight Meets Dead Resistance
On a ship or railway, ballast weighs things down. In a lamp circuit, it does the opposite: it holds steady.
To anyone outside a workshop or engine room, ballast means heavy material loaded into a vessel or vehicle to keep it stable and upright. Ships carry water or iron ore in their bilges; railway engineers dump tons of stone chips between the sleepers. The word comes from the maritime practice of filling holds with anything inert and heavy enough to lower the centre of gravity.
In electrical supply, a ballast is an entirely different kind of stabilizer. Rather than a mass, it is a device inserted into a circuit to limit and regulate the flow of current. The most common ballast is a choke or reactor: a coil of wire wound around an iron core that resists changes in current, smoothing out spikes and surges. In a fluorescent tube circuit, the ballast ignites the gas inside the tube and then holds the current constant as the tube glows. Without it, the tube would draw more and more current until it burned out. The ballast absorbs that excess energy as heat and magnetic field, the way a shock absorber absorbs vibration.
The two uses are not as far apart as they seem. Both do the work of regulation through resistance. A ship's ballast resists the tipping force of wind and waves by sheer inertia and weight. An electrical ballast resists the tendency of current to surge and spike by offering impedance. In each case, something unruly is brought under control by opposing it with mass, friction, or electromagnetic drag.
The word moved into electrical engineering early in the 20th century, when electric lighting spread. Engineers borrowed the maritime term because the function was the same: to stabilize. Where a ship's hold stays level by carrying ballast, a lamp stays lit at constant brightness by the ballast limiting current. The metaphor held, and the industrial vocabulary settled. Today, ballast remains standard terminology for any current-limiting device in AC circuits, from street lamps to high-intensity discharge fixtures.
