Batten: from board to structural grip
A batten is a wooden strip that holds, strengthens or secures. Outside carpentry it is just a thin plank.
To most people, a batten is simply a thin, flat piece of wood, possibly a lath used for fencing or shutters. The word carries no sense of purpose beyond material form.
In carpentry and construction, a batten is a structural component with a specific job: to hold members of a structure together, to provide a fixing point for other materials, to strengthen assemblies, or to prevent warping. A batten might be nailed across the back of a wooden door to prevent it bowing; laid horizontally across roof rafters to create a nailing surface for shingles or tiles; or run vertically under wall sheathing to stiffen it. The batten is not decorative or incidental. It does load-bearing or load-distributing work.
The distinction rests on structural intent. Any thin wooden strip can be called a batten colloquially. But in the trade, a batten is sized, positioned and fastened to fulfil a structural demand. A counter batten on a sloped roof, for example, is a vertical strip screwed or nailed perpendicular to the rafters, creating an air space and providing a nailing surface for horizontal battens above it. Without the counter batten the upper battens would bear directly on the rafter, trapping moisture and potentially causing rot.
The word likely derives from the verb "to batt", meaning to beat or strike repeatedly, though this etymology is not certain. The noun gathered its meaning over centuries of carpentry practice: a batten is what you beat, nail or screw in place to bind other components. The industrial sense is simply the precise, technical expression of that functional role.
