A plank or strip of wood, or several of such strips arranged side by side, used in construction to hold members of a structure together, to provide a fixing point, to strengthen, or to prevent warping.

A batten is a narrow strip of wood, typically between 25 and 150 mm wide and 12 to 50 mm thick, cut from solid timber or engineered board. It serves as a mechanical fastener and structural support, bridging gaps, securing adjoining pieces, and preventing cupping or warping in wider boards. Battens are found in roofing, flooring, wall cladding, and framing work, often installed perpendicular to the primary structural members they are meant to reinforce.
In roof construction, battens run horizontally across rafters to support slates or tiles and to distribute their weight evenly. In weatherboarding and timber cladding, vertical or horizontal battens are nailed through the outer layer into the substrate to hold planks flat and aligned. Floor battens, sometimes called joists when they are primary structural members, can be secondary supports laid across primary joists to prevent deflection. The choice of batten size depends on the span, load, timber species, and intended use; a batten supporting roof tiles over a 600 mm span requires different timber grade and dimensions than one used merely to cover a joint.
Movement and fastening
Wood moves with humidity and temperature. Battens prevent this movement in adjacent boards by clamping them mechanically, either through multiple fastening points or by their own stiffness. A batten applied across the grain of a wide panel will resist cupping far more effectively than any finish can. Fastening is usually done with nails or screws driven through the batten into the substrate; the batten itself should be fixed at intervals typically between 400 and 600 mm, depending on the load and material stiffness. Over-spacing leads to buckling or sagging; under-spacing wastes labour and material.
Failure occurs when battens are installed too loosely (allowing movement), when the fastener spacing is too wide (causing deflection), or when the batten material itself is too soft or thin for the load. Rot and insect damage can degrade battens, particularly at the overlap with the substrate where moisture can trap. Poorly chosen batten orientation can also allow water to pool or run along grain, accelerating decay. In wet environments such as roof spaces or exterior applications, batten species and treatment become critical; softwoods used outdoors must be pressure-treated or naturally durable.
The term 'batten' likely derives from the Middle English 'baten', to reduce or flatten, though its modern sense in construction refers more to the action of securing or holding fast. It remains distinct from a furring strip, which is thinner and used primarily to create a level plane or air gap, and from a joist or rafter, which are primary structural members rather than secondary reinforcement. In modern practice, the line between these terms is blurred; a batten in one context may be structurally primary in another.
