Blister: From Skin to Roofing
Everyone knows the painful fluid-filled bump on your foot. On a construction site, it is an air pocket that threatens the integrity of your roof.
To most people, a blister is a small, painful swelling on the skin filled with clear fluid, caused by friction, heat, or a burn. It is a wound, temporary and unwelcome. You treat it by draining it and keeping it clean.
In roofing and waterproofing, a blister is an enclosed pocket of air, sometimes mixed with water or solvent vapor, trapped between impermeable layers. It forms between membrane layers (such as built-up felt or synthetic rubber) or between the membrane and its substrate, which is usually concrete or wood. Blisters in roofing are a structural defect. They signal a failure of adhesion or a failure to release trapped gases and moisture during installation.
The blister forms when heat or humidity causes the trapped air or vapor to expand, pushing the upper layer away from the lower one. The result looks like a bubble in the roofing material, sometimes a few inches across, sometimes larger. It weakens the seal and can lead to leaks. A blister that breaks open exposes the membrane and substrate to weather and UV light, accelerating deterioration.
The causes are practical and chemical. If the substrate is damp when the membrane is applied, moisture will evaporate and create vapor pressure underneath. If the membrane is adhered with hot asphalt or adhesive, trapped air may not have time or space to escape before the material cools and hardens. Poor surface preparation, inadequate primer, or failure to use proper installation techniques all increase the risk.
The term transferred from medicine to materials science because both involve an enclosed, visible pocket that should not be there. In roofing, the blister is not a sign of healing; it is a sign of failure. Prevention requires dry substrates, proper ventilation during installation, and careful attention to manufacturer specifications.
