Bushing: From padding to precision bearing
Outside the shop, a bushing cushions and softens. Inside it, a bushing is a hardened cylindrical lining that lets shafts spin without seizure.
To most people, a bushing is soft material used for padding or cushioning. You might bushing the edges of a tool handle, or a plant grows thick and bushing. The word carries an idea of softness, bulk, something that gives way.
In mechanical engineering, a bushing is almost the opposite in spirit: a precision cylindrical bearing insert, typically made of bronze, copper alloy, or engineered plastic, pressed or fitted into a hole to serve as a low-friction surface for a rotating or sliding shaft. Where a plain bearing allows a shaft to turn directly in a housing, a bushing is that bearing itself, a replaceable sleeve that takes the wear instead of the expensive housing. It is hard, dimensioned to tight tolerances, and designed to last until it is worn out, then removed and replaced.
The bushing works by allowing the shaft to turn within its bore with a controlled clearance, typically lubricated by oil or grease. The material composition matters critically. A bronze bushing can handle higher speeds and loads than a nylon one. A sintered bronze bushing, impregnated with oil, releases lubricant as it wears, extending service life. In applications from automotive suspension to industrial machinery, the bushing is a small, humble, and essential part that prevents direct metal-to-metal contact that would cause rapid failure.
The term has roots in the idea of lining or casing: a bushing was historically a metal lining inserted into a hole, a use that dates back to the 18th century. The metaphor of 'bushing' as padding or softening may have borrowed the word from this technical sense, or the two may have evolved in parallel from an older verb meaning to thicken or expand. In trades other than mechanical engineering, you will rarely hear the word used with precision; in the machine shop and the bearing supplier, it is a category unto itself, with subtypes, standards, and part numbers.
