Chain: From jewelry to the surveyor's measuring rod
To most people, a chain is decorative or restraining. To a surveyor, it is the standard instrument for measuring land.
A chain in everyday speech means a series of linked rings, usually made of metal. It might hang from a neck, secure a gate, or bind an anchor to a ship. The links are ornamental or functional but not standardized. Their length matters only for appearance or strength.
In surveying, a chain is a precisely manufactured measuring instrument. It consists of 100 links of equal length, each exactly 7.92 inches long, which makes the total length exactly 66 feet. This standard, called Gunter's chain after the mathematician Edmund Gunter, was adopted as the basis for land measurement in the English-speaking world. When a surveyor holds and stretches a chain across ground, each link represents a known distance. The chain itself becomes data: distances recorded in chains and links can be converted to acres, furlongs, and miles without calculation, because the proportions were built into the tool.
The technique of measuring land with a chain is called chainwork. A surveyor and an assistant would stretch the chain between two points, mark the ground at the end, then leapfrog the chain forward and repeat. The recorded distance, given in chains and links, was the basis of a property boundary, a road layout, or a construction site. The method was slow but honest: it left physical evidence and could be checked by repeating the measurement.
Chainage in surveying refers to the cumulative distance measured along a line, typically the centre line of a road or railway. A point at chainage 5 means 5 chains from the start. This notation turns the chain from an object into a unit of account, embedded in every map and deed produced by the surveyor.
The word chain entered surveying because the instrument itself is a chain, but the trade adopted it so completely that it became the unit of linear measure. Other trades borrowed the same chain for their own power transmission: a chain drive or chain-driven system uses an endless loop of links to carry motion from one wheel to another, just as the surveyor's chain carries measurement from one point to the next. In both cases, the chain converts continuous force or distance into discrete, repeatable increments.
