Twitter: A Knot That Stops the Loom
To most people, Twitter is a social network. To a textile mill worker, it's a defect that jams the machinery.
In everyday English, twitter means to chirp or chatter, and today it names a social media platform where people post short messages. The word evokes lightness, speed, rapid-fire speech. But in the textile trade, a twitter is something that stops work entirely: a knot, tangle, or other imperfection in a thread or yarn that catches in the spinning frame or loom and halts production.
The manufacturing sense is concrete and costly. A twitter forms when fibers fail to draft smoothly, when slubs bunch up, or when waste becomes entangled in the thread. The defective yarn reaches the loom or spinning frame, snags on a guide, and the machinery must shut down. A weaver or spinner stops, cuts out the snarled section, ties the ends back together, and restarts. In high-speed mills, a single twitter can interrupt the entire beam and waste minutes of production time across multiple looms downstream.
The term also appears in older American textile jargon as 'twit,' reinforcing the sense of something small but disruptive. The defect itself is often visible: a hard knot, a nub of tangled fiber, or a thin weak spot where the yarn is about to break. Quality control in yarn preparation includes a step called 'clearing' or 'cleaning' to remove twitterers before the yarn ever reaches the loom.
The word itself likely derives from the same root as 'twitch' or 'twist,' suggesting something nervous, jerky, or knotted. In textiles, the connection is direct: a twitter is a twist gone wrong, a knot where there should be none. The social media platform, named decades later, borrowed the bird-call sense of the word to suggest rapid and light communication. The two meanings now sit far apart, but both carry echoes of something small, sudden, and hard to ignore.
