Stoping: Mining's excavation versus stepping over

To stop a process means to halt it, but in mining, stoping means the opposite: the deliberate removal of ore to create an expanding void.

To stop something in everyday speech is to cease it, to interrupt motion or process. You stop a car, stop a conversation, stop an action. The word carries finality and stillness.

In mining, stoping is the active phase of extraction itself. It refers specifically to the removal of ore from a vein or orebody in an underground mine, proceeding in stages upward or downward through the deposit. As ore is extracted in successive cuts, the miner leaves behind a progressively larger open space called a stope. This void is the working face where miners excavate the valuable material, using drills, blasting, or mechanical methods depending on the hardness and geometry of the ore. The stope is as central to the mine as the excavation pit is to a surface quarry.

The term belongs to a family of mining vocabulary: a stoper is the miner who performs stoping work; stoping blasts are the charges fired to fragment ore within the stope; and stoping method refers to the systematic sequence (underhand, overhand, cut-and-fill) by which the ore body is progressively removed. Each method depends on the stope's size, the strength of surrounding rock, and what support or backfill will remain behind.

The etymology likely derives from stop in the sense of a fixed point or level, related to the Old Norse stoppa. Mining adopted the word to name the opening itself, then shifted the meaning to the act of creating that opening. The final product, the stope, is what remains when stoping is complete: a void, a stop, a boundary in the earth.
