Knuckle: from joint to sharp bend
Your knuckles bend fingers. In manufacturing, a knuckle is where metal or hull plating abruptly changes direction.
To most people, a knuckle is a finger joint, the rounded prominence where bone meets bone. You crack your knuckles, skin over them wrinkles when you make a fist. The word itself likely comes from Old Germanic roots meaning to bend or press, and it has kept that sense for centuries.
In manufacturing and marine engineering, a knuckle is something far more specific and angular. It is a convex ridge or line where the surface of a vessel or tank changes direction abruptly, rather than in a smooth curve. In a canal boat, for example, the knuckle appears where a nearly vertical hull side meets a nearly flat bottom; the angle is sharp and definite, not rounded. This transition is engineered deliberately. The knuckle creates structural stiffness, defines the waterline form, and simplifies both design and construction.
Shipbuilders and tank manufacturers rely on knuckles to control how metal plate bends and how water or cargo loads distribute across the hull or container. A knuckle marks a boundary: on one side, one direction of curvature; on the other, another. This makes it easier to lay out plating patterns and to predict how stress will travel through the structure. On small vessels and barges especially, knuckles are common because they keep construction simple and costs down.
The word borrowed its everyday meaning of a bend or corner and applied it to the hull. Where a finger knuckle is rounded and flexible, a structural knuckle is hard and permanent. Both mark a point where something changes direction, but the finger joint was there first, in everyday language, and the shipyard adopted the term for its own sharp angles.
