Rouleau: From Wheels to Fabric Fasteners

To most people, rouleau is not a word at all. In French, it means a small wheel or roller, derived from the Old French rouel. The word traveled into English through the textile trades, where it picked up a second life as manufacturing jargon.

In fashion manufacturing, a rouleau is a tube of fabric, usually bias tape or cord, sewn closed and sometimes filled. When used decoratively, it creates raised piping that outlines seams, armholes, or necklines, adding texture and visual definition to a garment. The piping is stitched flat to the surface of the fabric during construction. But the rouleau loop is different: it is a small loop of that same cord or piping, folded back on itself and anchored into a seam. These loops sit along the edge of a garment, usually spaced at regular intervals, and serve as buttonholes. A button passes through each loop rather than through a slit in fabric.

The rouleau loop fastening is most closely associated with bridal wear, particularly the back of wedding gowns. The technique creates a formal, delicate appearance where a row of loops runs down the center back or side seam, each holding a covered button. This method is labor-intensive because each loop must be individually positioned, anchored, and tested before the seam is closed. The loops must be the correct depth to grip the button securely without tearing.

Both uses derive from the same core idea: a rolled or tubular form. The decorative piping rolls across the surface of the fabric; the loop rolls back on itself to catch a button. The difference lies in function, not in the making. Decorative rouleau enriches the eye; functional rouleau replaces a buttonhole and becomes part of the structure. In manufacturing, both require precision stitching and careful placement, but only the loop must also calculate for button diameter and fabric stress.
