Unpick: From seam-ripping to yarn recovery
Most people unpick stitches to fix a mistake. In manufacturing, unpicking is a deliberate process to reclaim raw material.
In everyday sewing, unpicking means pulling out stitches one by one to undo a seam or correct an error. It is tedious work: you use a seam ripper or small knife to cut threads and unthread the needle, stitch by stitch. The fabric stays intact, but the fastening is destroyed.
In textile manufacturing, unpicking has a narrower and more purposeful meaning: the systematic removal of knitted fabric in order to recover the yarn intact. This is done on commercial scale with machines that catch a loose end and feed the knit backward, unraveling it row by row. The yarn winds onto a spool as it comes undone. This process works only on pure knit goods like sweaters, cardigans, and jersey cloth, where the yarn forms continuous interlocking loops.
The unpicked yarn, called noil or reclaimed fiber, is then cleaned, rewound, and fed back into production. This matters because virgin wool and other natural fibers are expensive. Unpicking recovers 90 percent of the fiber weight by simply reversing the knit structure, which is far more efficient than shredding and reprocessing into staple fiber. The recovered yarn can return to a spinner to be twisted anew, or directly to a knitting frame.
The two meanings share a root concept: both undo stitching. But in general sewing, unpicking is a rescue operation on small items, done by hand to preserve fabric. In manufacturing, it is an industrial recovery process designed into the production cycle, treating knitted waste as a feedstock rather than loss. The machine-based unpicking of the 20th century separated the industrial sense from the household one, turning what was once a patient craft task into scheduled material retrieval.
