Unpicking is the deliberate unraveling of knitted fabric, row by row, to recover usable yarn. The process reverses the interlocking loops that form knit structure, allowing the yarn to be wound back onto bobbins or cones for reuse. This distinguishes unpicking from shredding or grinding, which destroys fiber integrity and produces only unusable flock or short fibers.
The work is performed by hand or on dedicated unpicking machines. Manual unpicking involves locating a loose end, pulling it to release one loop at a time, and winding the freed yarn onto a bobbin. Industrial unpicking machines use rotating drums or pulleys to accelerate the unraveling process while a worker guides the fabric. Speed depends on yarn weight and fabric density; a fine merino garment may unravel at 10 to 20 meters per minute, while a bulky wool jumper advances faster.
Successful unpicking requires intact yarn. If the original knit used damaged, weak, or heavily felted wool, the yarn breaks during unraveling and becomes unusable. Similarly, garments dyed after knitting are harder to unpick because the dye sets the fiber and increases friction between loops. Synthetic blends or heavily processed wools resist the process more than virgin or loosely constructed knits.
Commercial use and fiber recovery
Unpicking remains viable in low-wage regions and for high-value fibers like merino, cashmere, or angora, where the recovered yarn justifies labor costs. Knitwear manufacturers also unpick production waste: failed garments, dropped stitches, and off-cut pieces are unpicked to reclaim yarn rather than discarded. The recovered yarn is often respun into lower-grade products or blended with virgin fiber.
The term derives directly from the verb pick, meaning to separate strands or loosen a knot. In textiles, picking has historically referred to manual fiber separation and carding, so unpicking naturally describes the reverse action on finished knit goods. The practice is economically marginal in industrialized nations where labor costs exceed the value of recovered wool, but remains standard in textile centers with lower wage scales and strong traditions of fiber reuse.
