Winder: From coil to cage
In everyday speech, a winder is anything that winds. In mining, it is the engine itself that hauls human lives up and down the shaft.
To most people, a winder is a small tool or device: something you turn to coil rope, wind a clock spring, or roll up a carpet. The word itself comes from the verb "to wind," and the image is passive, almost domestic. You grip it and rotate it. The effort is yours.
In a mine, the winder is the opposite: a massive engine, usually steam-driven and later electric, that does all the work. Its job is to raise and lower the cage, or skip, that carries miners and ore up and down the shaft. The cage itself may weigh tons; the rope weighs more. The engine must develop enough torque to stop and start smoothly, to hold the load stationary, and to do this hundreds of times a shift, day after day. A winder is not portable. It is bolted to the surface, often in its own building above the pit head.
The engine operates a drum, or sometimes a series of pulleys, around which the winding rope is wound. As the drum turns, the rope lengthens or shortens, raising or lowering the cage. The winder must be reversible and precise. An accident in a mine kills not one person but dozens, all in the cage at once. The winder operator, watching from a small cabin, responds to bell signals from the cage to start, stop, and reverse. The signals ring out across the pit head.
Mining borrowed the name from the everyday tool because both actions involve winding rope around a drum. But the scale, the stakes, and the nature of the labor are utterly different. A winder is not a person turning a crank. It is a machine that holds lives in its grip, and it was among the first machines to demand absolute reliability, redundancy, and regulation by law.
