A winder is a powerful rotating machine installed at the surface of a mine that controls the descent and ascent of cages carrying personnel and ore through the shaft. It consists of a large drum (or pair of drums) onto which a steel rope winds and unwinds, connected to an engine that can be steam, electric, or diesel driven. The cage itself hangs from this rope; as the drum rotates, the rope lengthens or shortens, moving the cage vertically through the shaft.

The mechanical design varies by shaft depth and load requirements. Shallow mines with light loads use single drum winders with friction brakes; deeper mines employ double drum systems where one drum winds as the other unwinds, balancing the load on the engine and reducing brake stress. The drums themselves are typically cast iron or steel, ranging from 2 to 5 meters in diameter, depending on rope thickness and depth. Rope diameters commonly range from 16 to 28 millimeters for hard-drawn steel cable, with safe working loads calculated conservatively to ensure multiple safety factors.

A skilled winder operator controls speed and direction from a surface cabin, monitoring depth indicators (counterweight positions or electronic depth gauges) to prevent overwinding, which would cause the cage to strike the headframe or rope to slack dangerously. Most winders incorporate multiple independent braking systems: a foot-operated mechanical brake for emergency stops and an automatic brake that engages if the rope tension drops suddenly. Speed is typically limited to 10 to 15 meters per second in production operation, though controlled lowering may proceed more slowly.

Failure modes include brake wear or failure (which can cause uncontrolled descent), rope degradation from corrosion or fatigue (requiring regular inspection and periodic replacement), and operator error under fatigue. Regular maintenance involves checking rope condition, brake function, drum alignment, and rope spooling; any sign of fraying, kinking, or uneven wear demands immediate rope replacement. Regulations in most jurisdictions mandate weekly brake testing and annual rope inspections by certified personnel.

The term winder derives simply from the winding action of the drum; it is used throughout English-speaking mining regions and remains current despite some decline in underground coal and metal mining. The winding engine represents one of the oldest continuous mechanical systems in industrial use, with basic designs established in the 19th century and refined steadily through the 20th century. Modern installations increasingly use electric motors with variable frequency drives to improve efficiency and control precision.
