0-100

A performance measure for automobiles, that measures elapsed time. The time taken for an automobile that starts from a standing start, and accelerates to 100 km/h (roughly 60 mph).

0-100: how fast a car launches from standstill

The 0-100 is a straight measurement of acceleration: the time in seconds it takes a car to reach 100 km/h from a complete stop on flat ground. It is the most common single metric for comparing raw performance across different vehicles, from economy cars to supercars. A typical family sedan achieves this in 9 to 12 seconds; a sports car might do it in 5 to 7 seconds; hypercars can drop below 3 seconds.

The metric matters because it reflects real-world capability in traffic merging, overtaking, and hill climbing. It also correlates directly with engine power, weight, and drivetrain efficiency. A heavier vehicle with the same engine will have a slower 0-100 time; adding 200 kg can cost half a second. Transmission type matters significantly: automatic and CVT gearboxes introduce lag that manual transmissions may avoid, though modern automatics have narrowed this gap.

Measurement conditions are not standardized across manufacturers. Most use a flat, dry tarmac surface with the handbrake released, engine at operating temperature, and no headwind. Tire condition affects results sharply; cold tires give slower times than warm ones. Some brands test with launch control engaged, others without, which can shift results by a full second. Real-world 0-100 times vary by driver skill, road surface, altitude, and ambient temperature, making published figures optimistic.

The 0-100 test has limitations. It does not measure mid-range acceleration (say, 50-130 km/h), top speed, handling, or braking. An SUV with strong low-end torque might have an impressive 0-100 but poor highway responsiveness. Electric vehicles often excel here because they deliver peak torque instantly from zero rpm, but their advantage fades at higher speeds where conventional engines build power through the rev band.

In marketing and regulation, the 0-100 remains the headline figure. It appears on spec sheets, insurance quotes, and emissions certifications (because acceleration tests feed emissions modeling). For engineers and buyers, it is useful shorthand but should always be paired with other data: 0-100 in 6 seconds tells you little if you do not know the car's weight, power output, or whether that time is repeatable or a one-off run with perfect conditions.
