Initialism of four-wheel steering.

4WS: steering all four wheels, not just two

Four-wheel steering (4WS) is a vehicle control system in which the rear wheels turn as well as the front wheels, rather than remaining fixed. By steering the rear axle, 4WS reduces the turning radius at low speeds and improves high-speed stability and lane-change response. The rear wheels typically turn through a much smaller angle than the front wheels, often limited to 5 to 10 degrees maximum.

Systems vary in how they steer the rear axle. Early mechanical 4WS designs used a cable or rod linkage running from the front steering box to a proportioning valve at the rear. Modern systems are electro-hydraulic or fully electric, with a separate actuator controlling rear wheel angle based on vehicle speed, steering input, and sensor feedback. The rear steering angle is usually proportional to front steering angle and vehicle speed: at low speeds the rear wheels may turn opposite to the front (toe-out mode), tightening the turn; at high speeds they turn the same direction as the front (toe-in mode), increasing stability.

4WS has been offered on certain Japanese and European passenger cars and SUVs since the 1980s. Implementation is expensive because it requires additional hydraulic lines, actuators, and control electronics. Longer wheelbase vehicles benefit most because they have larger turning radii and can swing their rear end across lanes during tight maneuvers. Compact cars see less advantage and rarely carry the system. Trucks and buses seldom use 4WS outside specialized applications like airport tow vehicles or confined-space refuse collection trucks.

The main trade-offs are cost, complexity, and maintenance. A failed rear steering actuator or sensor can degrade handling unpredictably. Repair requires specialized diagnostic equipment. Tire wear may be uneven if the rear steering mechanism develops play or binding. Driver familiarity also matters: some operators find the sharper initial turn-in response unsettling, especially if they are accustomed to conventional steering feel.

4WS is sometimes confused with all-wheel drive (AWD), which is a powertrain feature. A vehicle can have 4WS without AWD, or AWD without 4WS. The two systems are independent and address different performance goals: AWD improves traction and acceleration, while 4WS improves turning agility and directional stability.
