tranny: shorthand for the gearbox that moves power to the wheels
In the shop and on the road, a tranny is the transmission, the assembly that takes engine torque and delivers it to the wheels through a series of gear ratios. It sits between the engine and the final drive, and its job is to multiply or divide rotational force depending on what the driving condition demands. Without it, an engine running at 5,000 rpm would either stall or fly apart before reaching highway speed.
The term covers both manual and automatic transmissions, though they work very differently. A manual requires the driver to engage a clutch and select gears by hand, typically four to six ratios in a passenger car. An automatic uses a torque converter and planetary gears to shift without driver input, now commonly offering eight, nine, or ten speeds. Both types must handle the same core problem: matching engine speed to wheel speed across a wide range of driving scenarios.
Wear and failure in a tranny usually shows up as slipping, where the engine revs but the car does not accelerate, grinding noises when shifting, or harsh engagement. A manual gearbox may suffer synchro wear (the cone surfaces that match gear speeds), while an automatic fills with burned fluid that smells sweet or acrid. Rebuilding a transmission is labor-intensive; replacement with a remanufactured unit is often cheaper, especially on older vehicles.
The word tranny is purely colloquial, born from mechanics' shorthand and shop talk. It does not appear in manufacturer specifications or formal service manuals, which use the full term transmission. Across the trade, you will hear it constantly, but it carries no technical precision and excludes no information, which is why it persists: it is fast to say and everyone knows exactly what you mean.
