An abreuvoir is the vertical or near-vertical joint between adjacent stones in masonry work, left intentionally during laying to receive mortar. The term comes from French, meaning literally 'watering place', referring to how mortar is 'fed into' the opening. In modern usage, stonemasons and bricklayers more commonly say 'joint' or 'bed joint' for horizontal gaps and 'perpend' or 'head joint' for vertical ones, making abreuvoir largely obsolete outside specialist conservation work.
The width of an abreuvoir varies with the type of work and stone size. In dressed stone masonry, joints might be 6 to 15 millimetres wide; in rubble work, they could be 25 to 40 millimetres or more. The mason leaves the abreuvoir unfilled during construction, either by spacing stones deliberately or by striking out loose mortar before it sets fully. The depth of the joint into the wall thickness affects how well mortar bonds and how weather-tight the work becomes.
Once the wall is built and has partially set, the abreuvoir is pointed: mortar is forced into the joint and finished flush, recessed, or in a concave profile depending on local practice and exposure conditions. Poor pointing into abreuvoir leaves voids that trap water and accelerate deterioration. Historic work often shows failed pointing where abreuvoir were under-filled or where soft mortar has eroded out, creating paths for water ingress and frost damage.
The term is largely confined to older technical literature, conservation specifications, and French-language masonry practice. Modern English-language stone trades rarely use it, though heritage restoration specialists may encounter the word in period specifications or when studying traditional techniques. In industrial contexts, it appears mainly in specifications for repair work on Georgian or Victorian ashlar facades, where understanding period construction methods remains important for durability.
