A picker is a pivoted or reciprocating arm in a power loom that strikes one end of the shuttle and drives it through the shed, from one side of the warp to the other. It is a primary component in the picking mechanism and operates in timed coordination with the opening and closing of the warp shed. The picker itself is usually made from wood, cast iron, or steel and connects to a driver or crank arm via a treadle or pitman rod, translating rotational or oscillating motion into the sharp, controlled blow needed to propel the shuttle at speed.
On most shuttle looms, two pickers are mounted on opposite sides of the loom, one striking the shuttle on each pass. The picker on the entering side strikes the shuttle tail first, accelerating it across; as the shuttle reaches the far selvage, the opposite picker engages and reverses its motion. The timing and force of the blow are critical: too weak and the shuttle stalls mid-warp; too strong and the shuttle overshoots, crashing into the reed or framework. Industrial looms operate at rates from 100 to 200 picks per minute or higher, so the picker mechanism must be precise and robust.
The striking surface of the picker experiences repeated impact and must resist denting and chipping. Many pickers are faced with leather, rubber, or cork to distribute force and reduce noise and shock. The connection to the driver arm is often a simple hinge or pin joint, and the arm itself tapers toward the striking end to reduce inertia and allow faster acceleration. Over time, the striking face wears or splits, degrading the quality of the pick and introducing vibration and noise into the loom.
The term picker derives from the action: it picks the shuttle, as one might pick a string. In older weaving literature it is sometimes called the picker arm or simply the arm. The analogous term in non-shuttle looms (such as projectile or air-jet looms) is less common because those machines use different insertion methods, but the functional role is similar: to impart momentum to the weft carrier in a controlled, repeatable manner.
The picker is one of the highest-wear components in a shuttle loom and its condition directly affects fabric quality, loom noise, and rate of weft breaks. Maintenance typically involves inspection for surface damage, periodic replacement of worn facing material, and alignment checks to ensure consistent impact along the shuttle cheek.
