air-head: the mine's breathing hole at surface
An air-head is a surface opening through which fresh air enters a mine's ventilation circuit. Unlike a shaft used for hoisting or personnel access, an air-head exists solely to supply intake air to underground workings. It typically consists of a simple portal or drift mouth positioned to catch natural air flow, often situated upwind of the mine relative to prevailing winds.
The term belongs to the older vocabulary of hard-rock and coal mining, when natural ventilation, driven by temperature differences and barometric pressure, was the primary means of moving air through underground passages. An air-head worked in tandem with return air shafts or portals; fresh air would be drawn down through the air-head, circulate past the working faces where it picked up heat and contaminants, then exit through separate return openings. The horizontal or nearly horizontal entrance distinguished it from vertical ventilation shafts.
In practice, an air-head required careful siting. Proximity to the return air outlet would cause short-circuiting, where stale air recirculated instead of fresh air reaching the depths. Similarly, an air-head positioned in a depression or lee would draw dust and fumes from the surface rather than clean air. Mining engineers learned to separate intake and return locations by distance and elevation to maximize circulation.
Modern mines with mechanical ventilation systems and forced-draft fans have largely superseded natural ventilation, and the term air-head has fallen out of use. Contemporary operations specify intake vents, return vents, and fan systems with precise airflow rates measured in cubic meters per minute. However, the principle remains: one dedicated opening for fresh air in, another for exhausted air out.
