A brusher is a miner who enlarges the height of underground roadways by removing rock or coal from the roof, floor, or both. The work is essential in mines where seams are thin or where machinery needs clearance to pass. A brusher uses hand tools, explosives, or mechanical cutters to break away the overlying or underlying rock, creating enough headroom for workers and equipment to move safely through the passage. This is distinct from general stonework because it must maintain the structural integrity of the roadway while removing material.
The term "brush" originates from the practice of cutting away at rock surfaces methodically, almost like brushing away material layer by layer. In coal mines, a brusher might remove sandstone or shale from above a coal seam to gain height without extracting too much coal. In hard rock mines, the work is heavier and may involve drilling and blasting to fracture the rock before removal. The scale varies widely: modest brushing might gain 6 to 12 inches of height, while major heading work can enlarge a roadway from 5 feet to 8 feet or more.
Brushers work in conditions of confined space, poor ventilation, and constant dust. Roof fall is a critical hazard; weakened strata above can collapse if not properly supported. For this reason, brushers must understand ground control, including when to install timber sets, steel arches, or bolting systems as they progress. In mechanized operations, brushers may operate or work alongside roof cutters, continuous miners, or bolting rigs that perform the work in a single pass.
The work demands precision because hasty brushing can destabilize the roadway. A brusher must read the geology, recognize weak bands, and know when to stop cutting before breaking into a different stratum that will not support the roof. Payment is often by the ton of material removed or by footage advanced, which incentivizes efficiency but can conflict with safety if controls are weak.
Modern mines use less hand brushing than in the past, relying instead on purpose-built cutting machines that advance and support simultaneously. However, selective brushing remains common in repair work, in driving new headings where machine access is limited, and in hard rock mines where selective cutting preserves ore. The skill is less common now but still essential in operations where roadways must adapt to changing geology or where old workings need enlargement.
