A jud is a section of coal seam that has been intentionally undercut and weakened at its base, leaving it suspended and ready to collapse when struck or wedged. The coal face is carved away beneath the main seam, creating an overhang that relies on the weight of the upper coal to stay in place. When a miner drives wedges into the undercut void, the jud breaks free and drops to the mine floor, breaking into manageable pieces during the fall.
The practice emerged from the physical constraints of hand mining, where explosives were either unavailable, dangerous in gas-prone seams, or prohibited in certain collieries. Undercutting a jud allowed miners to bring down coal without blast work, making it safer in gassy mines and faster in some conditions than waiting for fuses or dealing with powder charges. The technique required skill: the undercut had to be deep enough to weaken the seam but not so deep that it triggered premature collapse or trapping of tools.
Juds varied in size depending on coal thickness and seam strength. Thin seams might produce juds only a few feet across, while thicker seams could yield juds of 10 to 15 feet or more. The depth of the undercut was critical, typically 3 to 4 feet into the seam. Poor undercutting often left the jud hanging precariously or failed to separate it cleanly, requiring additional work or creating safety hazards as miners reset their position to drive more wedges.
The term appears most often in records from British collieries and historical mining accounts. It reflects the vocabulary of practical mine work rather than formal engineering, and its use declined as mechanical cutting and powered extraction became standard. Today the word survives mainly in historical mining texts and regional mining heritage discussion, but the underlying principle of weakening coal by undercutting before fracture remains relevant to modern load-control methods in underground operations.
